20 year old Naomi Osaka won the U.S.Open tonight, becoming the first Japanese woman to win a Grand Slams singles title. But instead of celebrating, Osaka's victory was overshadowed by booing of the crowd over Serena Williams's violation, leaving Naomi and Serena in tears.
Serena received a coaching violation from chair umpire Carlos Ramos, after her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, made a gesture to her from the stands.
“I don’t cheat to win,” she said emphatically. “I’d rather lose.”
She was assessed a second violation after she slammed her racquet following her loss in the fifth game of the second set, which cost her a point.
She accused Ramos of being a "thief" and angrily demanded an apology.
"You're attacking my character," she fumed. "You will never, ever be on another court of mine. You are the liar."
Osaka won the match soon thereafter as boos cascaded from the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After the match, Williams hugged Osaka.
"Well I don't want to be rude but I don’t want to do questions. She played well," Williams said, referring to Osaka. "This is her first grand slam. I know you guys were rooting ... let's not boo anymore ... congratulations Naomi ... I hope to play here again."
"I'm sorry it had to end like this," Osaka said. "I just want to say thank you for watching the match ... it was always my dream to play Serena at the U.S. Open finals ... I am grateful. Thank you."
