A woman hasn't won Best Director at Cannes since Yuliya Solntseva in 1961. Sofia Coppola changed that at Cannes 2017 as the Gala wrapped up on Sunday.

Coppola was honored for “The Beguiled,” a Southern Gothic horror that updates the 1971 Civil War drama starring Clint Eastwood. Three of the director’s previous features ― “The Virgin Suicides,” “Marie Antoinette” and “The Bling Ring” ― also competed at Cannes.

Coppola praised her great team and cast and thanked Universal Studios and one of its speciality divisions, Focus Features, “for their support of women-driven films.”

Since the first trailer was released, it appears Sofia Coppola's next project was a remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film The Beguiled where she did cast frequent collaborators Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning in the Civil War era tale.

Now with Coppola picking up Best Director award at the Cannes film festival, it appears our anticipation will be worth it. But if you needed any more reason to be excited
