Assemblage art by Josephine Verbist

Assemblage art is often noted for its ability to convey deeper meanings through the juxtaposition of everyday objects, inviting viewers to contemplate themes such as time, memory, impermanence, or environmental concerns. Our latest featured artist is the talented Dutch painter, Josephien Verbis who is based in Leiden. Her artwork is an example of assemblage art, a form of visual art that involves creating three-dimensional compositions using a variety of found objects and materials. These elements are arranged thoughtfully to evoke a sense of nostalgia or decay, as they suggest natural and man-made materials that have aged or been discarded.

Josephine studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and the Free Academy in The Hague. Among her mentors were Jan van Heel, Jan Sierhuis, and Wil Bouthoorn. She also pursued psychology at the Universities of Utrecht and Leiden, specializing in clinical psychology with a focus on art psychology and a secondary study in art history.
